Meet Chris

Chris was previously a highly rated investment analyst throughout a 20-year career in the City. He held the senior role of Head of European Equity Investment Research for ABN AMRO Bank & was also Chairman of the European Equities Management Committee of the bank.

Following his City career, Chris was elected Chairman of Derbyshire County Cricket Club. His 6 years as Chairman of Derbyshire CCC saw a huge turnaround in the Club’s finances. He presided over 6 successive years of profits for the Club and £4m was invested into improving the Club’s facilities.

Chris stepped down from his role as Chairman of Derbyshire in March 2017 to focus on establishing Baron & Grant Investment Management Limited.

Chris is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment.

Meet John

John Baron CBE is one of the UK’s leading experts on investment trusts. He is perhaps best known to readers of the FT’s Investors Chronicle magazine for having successfully managed and reported on two real investment trust portfolios since 2009 – as measured by their respective MSCI PIMFA benchmarks. His popular monthly column is closely followed and helps investors – private and professional – with their investments.

John has used investment trusts in both a private and professional capacity for nearly 40 years. After university, travel and the Army, he entered the City and, in a career spanning 14 years, managed a broad range of portfolios for charities and private clients as a Director of Henderson Private Clients (later Henderson Global Investors) and then Rothschild Asset Management. While at Rothschild, he was also responsible for the core UK equity portfolio.

Since leaving the City, John has helped charities monitor their fund managers, has written The FT Guide to Investment Trusts, contributes to other publications including The Investment Trusts Handbook 2021, and regularly speaks at financial seminars. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Securities & Investment and holds the certificate in Private Client Advice & Investment Management.

He has also founded Equi Ltd which manages the website www.johnbaronportfolios.co.uk. The website reports to its members in real time on the progress of nine real investment trust portfolios as they achieve a range of risk-adjusted strategies and income levels. The website’s open Performance page testifies to their success relative to respective benchmarks.

John has long believed that investment trusts are the best form of funds for most long-term investors if properly harnessed, and that investment is best kept simple to succeed – complexity adds cost, risks confusion and usually hinders performance. With the help of the investment team, this philosophy very much lies at the heart of Baron & Grant’s approach when managing clients’ portfolios.

Meet Tom

Following a 10-year career as a professional cricketer, Tom retrained in financial planning, advice and investment management.

After several work experience opportunities at leading financial firms, Tom was instrumental in establishing Baron & Grant Investment Management Limited. He is a qualified Financial Adviser and also sits on the Investment Committee.

In 2023, Tom was shortlisted for the Investment Week Investment Company of the Year Rising Star Award.

He is a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment.

Tom also sits on the Board of Derbyshire County Cricket Club as the Non-Executive Director for Cricket.

Meet Mark

Mark is a nationally recognised, top-rated Chartered Financial Planner – an exclusive accreditation that is the gold standard of excellence and integrity within the financial services industry.

He has worked in financial services for more than 15 years. Much of his early career was spent in London, where he worked with high-net-worth individuals and businesses before moving back to the Midlands.

Mark leads on providing financial planning and advice for Baron & Grant Investment Management Limited, supported by Tom and Harvey.

Mark also owns Integritas Financial Planners Limited, which is based in South Derbyshire.

Following an 8-year career as a professional cricketer, Harvey retrained in financial planning, advice and investment management.

Harvey is a qualified Financial Adviser and sits on the Investment Committee.

He holds the Investment Management Certificate (IMC) through the CFA UK and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment.
